My Creative Journey

It’s been a long time since I have updated my website. I would like to share a bit about my creative journey over the past few years.

Feeling stuck with my painting process; I turned my attention to pottery. Primarily hand building since I don’t have a wheel. It was enormously satisfying AND frustrating. The clay has a mind of its own! Working with clay required all of me. Total focus. There was no room for my mind to wander. I loved this and I needed it. Glazes became another challenge altogether. I am absolutely a novice and have gained an enormous respect for the craft. Working with clay was a wonderful and timely distraction - but not the answer to why I still felt stuck with my painting. I had to know what I was painting about! At least I thought that was the issue.

I decided to take an online class with an abstract artist and teacher from New Zealand - Judy Woods. I went back to ground zero and learned how to play again - letting go of outcomes. I would spend hours in my studio caught up in layering paint, paper, inks and oil pastels. Through six months of practice, I realized that I didn’t have to know what I was painting about. I just had to trust the process and play.

I continue to be challenged with bringing a multitude of visual elements to a cohesive and pleasing whole. What I need to remember again and again is that the answer lies within me. Can I trust myself?

Integrity is as important to me in life as it is in my painting. Honest vulnerable presence and “mark making”. Keep playing ..… this is the way forward and the key to joy in the creative journey.
